The
Southeast Ridge route is the most popular route on Mt. Everest.
Relative to routes on the north side of the mountain (in Tibet),
the Southeast Ridge route is easily accessible (relatively - it's
still a 10 day hike in!). Due to the extreme gain in elevation
when climbing Everest, several camps are established to allow
the team to climb and sleep progressively higher on the mountain,
therefore ensuring that they are properly acclimatized before
making a bid for the summit.
These
Camps (I-IV) and other major features encountered by the climbers
are described in the map above.
